Story and Beliefs

KXC STORY AND BELIEFS

KXC was planted out of St Mary’s Bryanston Square on 14 February 2010. Commissioned by the Bishop of London, Pete and Bee Hughes were sent from St Mary’s with a small group of leaders and a simple vision: to recklessly give themselves away to God, each other and the people of King’s Cross and beyond.

Without a permanent place to call home, KXC began renting space for Sunday gatherings from the Lumen United Reform Church, and later from the Ethiopian Church on Pentonville Road, whilst meeting together midweek in homes and pubs, and wherever else we could find space locally.

Over time, things have gradually grown: kids’ work has developed as children have been born in to the family; we’ve seen new students and graduates arriving in London; we’ve seen lots of people come to faith, come back to faith and come alive in their faith; and we regularly welcome people who have no faith in Jesus, but just enjoy coming along. Alongside this, all sorts of new ministries have been birthed out of the heart of the church family.

The journey so far has been a huge amount of fun; we’ve been through lots of changes and challenges since we began, but much remains the same. We still cling to the same vision of seeing God’s kingdom extended in King’s Cross, our workplaces, our homes and our universities; and we still remain convinced that our only hope of seeing such a vision fulfilled is found in God’s strength rather than our own will-power, giftings or hard work.

In many ways, the KXC adventure has been a story of God building his church, as he promised, and being incredibly faithful as we’ve sought to be obedient and keep in step with him. And we believe that the best is yet to come.

VISION

Our vision is to serve God's purpose to make all things new.

We seek to pursue this vision by recklessly giving ourselves away to God, each other and the people of King's Cross and beyond.

OUR CONVICTIONS

KXC is part of the ‘one holy catholic and apostolic Church’. We hold to the historic teachings of Christian orthodoxy as articulated in the Apostles Creed and the Nicene Creed, and subscribe to recent summaries of Christian doctrine as formulated in the EA statement of faith.

As a church, we have 5 core convictions:

  • We receive Holy Scripture as our authority for faith and life. In doing so we submit to God’s word, echoing the words of Jesus in Gethsemane, “Not my will be done but yours.” This is a death that brings about resurrection life. It enables us to find the blueprint for kingdom life in Scripture and build accordingly.

  • We choose to operate with a guide not a map, believing that God’s presence leads us to abundance. We long for the Spirit to shape our character, endow us with gifts, release calling, and enable faithfulness, courage and obedience as we participate in God’s mission on earth.

  • Our primary call is to be with Jesus, to become like Jesus and to do as he did. We therefore seek to adopt Jesus’ teachings, lifestyle, and mission as the model for life, shaping our individual character and communal identity.

  • We have a radical commitment to kingdom family in all its diversity, celebrating cultural, ethnic and social difference, and united around the person of Jesus. Just as we were physically born to be dependent on others, so Christian life and ministry is a practice of deep relational dependency. We therefore remain accountable with one another; close enough to speak into every aspect of each other’s lives.

  • We proclaim Christ as Lord and the resurrection as a sure hope for eternal salvation. This means seeking to align all of life with God’s reign and purposes. Extending the kingdom involves both personal and cultural transformation, living as ambassadors of God’s kingdom in every sphere of life.

We also have 3 theological distinctives:

  • KXC has a firm belief in the role of women in all levels of leadership. We believe that women and men are equally gifted and qualified to lead and serve as co-laborers in the church. We therefore value and actively champion the presence of both men and women at every level of church leadership.

  • At KXC we use the language of ‘generous orthodoxy’ regarding Human Sexuality. This means that KXC holds to the historic orthodox position of the Church (which believes sex is for the context of marriage between a man and a woman), whilst holding that space with radical generosity. We therefore seek to create spaces where there can be genuine dialogue and conversation. We ask our leaders to respect this position of generous orthodoxy, which means that though some may hold a different view, they don’t seek to undermine KXC’s teaching or actively promote a different theological perspective.

  • Charismatic Theology is a key component of our life and practice at KXC. We believe that being continually filled with the Holy Spirit and operating in the gifts of the Spirit are critical to the mission of the church to usher in God’s Kingdom in the world.

KXC & Racial Justice

At KXC, we’re committed to growing into a greater reflection of heaven, where everyone is valued, respected, and seen.

Our Racial Justice Core Team, Seven:Nine, exists to lovingly hold our community accountable as we pursue freedom from systemic racism and to build a church where all can say they truly belong. Rooted in the vision of Revelation 7:9, we long to see a multi-ethnic and multicultural church that reflects the heart of God and His kingdom.
